BOFAS are pleased to offer 2 options of charitable financial grants for orthopaedic foot & ankle specialist training fellowships.
1. BOFAS Annual Travelling Fellowship
Gold, Silver and Bronze fellowship grant - £7500, £5000 and £2500 respectively.
These cash grants are available to support individuals planning six to twelve month fellowships in foot and ankle surgery. They are awarded once per year with applications marked during the BOFAS Annual Congress and announced soon afterwards.
Applications are open to:
UK Orthopaedic Trainees (ST) on accredited training programmes
Or
UK Fellows on a BOFAS-approved Fellowship
Or
UK Orthopaedic Consultants who are within six months of their CCT date and are working in the NHS.
2. Kar Teoh Visitation Fellowship
Honouring a life dedicated to family, patients, and surgical excellence
The Kar Teoh Fellowship is for £1000 and can only be applied to travelling fellowships in Europe in honour of the positive experiences Kar had on his European fellowships.

This Fellowship, created in memory of Dr. Kar Hao Teoh, aims to inspire future foot and ankle surgeons by reflecting Kar’s deep dedication to his family, patients, and the pursuit of surgical excellence.
Known for his meticulous approach and ability to connect with people, Kar was a beloved consultant at Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he led initiatives that demonstrably enhanced patient outcomes. He trained in Scotland, England and Wales and personified turning challenges into triumphs. Always seeking to elevate his knowledge and skills, he authored 66 research papers by the age of 40y and earned accolades for his leadership in clinical trials.
Kar Hao trained under internationally respected specialists and won prestigious fellowships in Europe and the USA. His passion for exploring diverse cuisines and traveling the world, enriched his life and broadened his horizons. This Fellowship award upholds Kar’s legacy by encouraging future surgeons to embrace his dynamic approach to achieve surgical excellence for the benefit of patients and the medical community.
3. BOFAS Visitation Fellowship
Up to £500.
This cash grant is available to support shorter ‘visiting’ type fellowships where travel is planned to gain specialist experience in Foot & Ankle surgery. They are awarded once per year with applications marked during the BOFAS Annual Congress and announced soon afterwards.
Applications are open to:
UK Orthopaedic Trainees (ST) on accredited training programmes
Or
UK Fellows on a BOFAS-approved Fellowship
Or
UK Orthopaedic Consultants who are within six months of their CCT date and are working in the NHS.
Guidelines for Application
Applications are only to be made via the online form accessed below (available only during application window) - no other form of application will be considered.
Please indicate which fellowship you are applying for:
Option 1. Annual Travelling fellowship (Gold, Silver or Bronze award)
Option 2. Kar Teoh Visitation Fellowship
Option 3. Visitation fellowship.
How to apply for Fellowships
You should include documentation from the centre(s) you are to visit, confirming:
- That your fellowship has been agreed,
- The planned start date,
- The scope of experience you will receive,
- A proposed timetable for the visit.
Complete applications are scored independently by three members of the BOFAS Education Committee using a pre-determined scoring framework.
The supporting statement is mandatory to the progression of a complete application to marking and you will need to upload this at the time of submitting your application (please upload as a PDF).
Please note that retrospective applications will not be considered.
Following closing of the application process and scoring, should the scoring be close, a further round of interviews may be offered to the highest scoring applicants - this will include a 5 minute presentation.
Upon return from fellowship all awarded applicants are expected to attend the subsequent year BOFAS Annual Conference and give a short podium presentation of their experience.
